TRAINING NEEDS OF TURMERIC GROWERS OF ERODE DISTRICT OF TAMIL NADU

Abstract


Turmeric (Curcuma longa L), the ancient and sacred spice of India known as ‘Indian saffron’ is an important commercial spice crop grown in India. India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of turmeric in the world contributing 78 per cent of the global production. Turmeric is the third largest spice produced in the country and it accounts for about 14.00 per cent of total spices produced in India. Turmeric production is largely concentrated in southern states of India. Tamil Nadu occupies second position with 35760 hectares with 190100 tonnes of annual production (2012-13) (http://www.indianspices.com/). In Tamil Nadu major turmeric growing districts are Erode, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri and Salem. Erode is the major turmeric belt in the state. Erode district is well known for turmeric production and turmeric market in entire country. Erode district has 8179 hectares under turmeric cultivation with a total production of 40641 million tonnes during 2013-2014 (http://www.indianspices.com/). The present investigation “Training Needs of Turmeric Growers of Erode District of Tamil Nadu” was carried out with a sample size of 120 turmeric growers. The study revealed that majority of the turmeric growers expressed high level of training needs for two major subject areas viz., rhizome treatment, and disease management, followed by nutrient management, pest management, weeding and planting method were the four technologies for which the respondents expressed need for training.
